Assignment 2

Analysis of Art of Seeing
Group 1:
We really like how they used the Sykes building to represent shape. Moving building to building the children's museum downtown has a wide array of colors bouncing off the walls.  With shades of colors bouncing off the bridge it made the bridge appear to be bigger than normal and gave it emphasis in the image.
Group 2:
As the swimmer dives into the water, it demonstrates movement in the literal meaning. Who said a finger was as big as a building? Well with them showing us that using the camera they could make there finger proportionally the same size. We really enjoyed seeing all of the different locations and how they brought them together to complete the project.
Group 3:
From paintings hanging in the hallway to wondering around campus, group 3 struggled a little bit with the topics but in the end pulled it together with some awesome pictures.
Group 4:
DUCK FACE..... Long out of style but we still love you Ben! All of their groups pictures flow perfectly and fit all the descriptions of each element they are trying to describe.
Group 5:
We love how they use variety and took a picture of the skyline. They were really creative with their pictures and made sure everything was on spot. For proportion it was really cool to see her and how she was proportionally different to the building.

Group 6:
Choosing all the different nations flags to represent color was a really interesting choice. We really like that through all the colors on the flags we are all united under one art element. FOR THE WIN! Thats the emphasis brought to the room by the giant spartan statue in the main entrance of Martinez.

Group 7:
COLORS, COLORS, COLORS. All of this groups pictures are bright and vibrant and that makes them 10000000 times more interesting to read and study. We really like how the incorporate many different things around campus to bring the whole project together.

 Assignment 4

Color

My favorite color is Sea Foam Green. I've grown up with this color and it is engrained in my memories. I grew up on the water on Anna Maria Island. Day in and day out would be spent splashing around in the crystal clear water. When I think of the color Sea Foam Green it always brings me back to a place I call home. I also love this color because it is a soothing color for me, its a reminder of peace and tranquility. I love the way the Sea Foam Green color fades into a darker color that eventually seems as if it becomes one with the sky. This color will always remind me of simpler times with my family and friends, that humbles me when life seems challenging. Sea Foam is not only my favorite color but a piece of home.

Assignment 6
Photo Caption

This is a bird’s eye view photograph of a grocery store that may have been taken from a security camera. (From bottom of the picture up) In the first aisle you’ll find pet supplies, the second aisle you’ll see barbeque, condiments, pickles, soups, and oils. Also in the second aisle there is a green caution wet floor sign. In the third aisle you’ll find two people browsing the kitchen and baking section. There are also different cooking supplies such as, cooking utensils, aluminum foil, spices, baking soda, and rice. In the next aisle there is a large plethora of cereals. The fifth aisle is filled with snacks, chips, candies, and gums. The final aisle is the drink and contains a mixture of water, juices, and sodas.
The emotional impact of this photo is a feeling a stress and clutter. The angle this photo was taken at makes the grocery store appear very overwhelming. The people in this photo appear to be indecisive as they try to choose baking supplies.
Before this photo was taken the store hadn’t opened yet. While security was checking the aisles for opening, he accidentally knocked a pickle jar off the shelf. He called a janitor to mop up the mess, causing him to put the caution wet floor sign in the aisle. After the photo was taken, the store filled with hungry customers and busy mothers after dropping their children off at school.
We believe that this photograph is trying to convey a diverse society. When you go to a grocery store there are different brands of a similar product, different flavors, and different quantities. This illustrates the connection between diversity among society and in grocery stores.

Assignment 7

Tim Roda follow up

Talking to Tim Roda about his work gave me a small insight into what he thinks about and how he wants his art to be depicted. At first glance of Roda's work I was immediately consumed with a feeling of darkness and vulnerability. After talking to Tim some of that assumption was accurate after hearing certain things about his past and childhood. Looking at his photographs by myself I didn't quite grasp the idea of the children in the photographs, but I came to find out that Roda enjoys photographing with his family and making memories. He seems very insightful and had deep thoughts and meaning behind his pictures. I liked how he played with our perceptions. For example, in certain photos I thought there was a shadow of a person in the background, when in actuality after talking to Roda, I found out that they were drawn in, I had no idea at first glance. I think he has an interesting take on art, which is evident in his photographs. He uses anything and everything to create a scene, and it appeared to me as clutter at first glance, but when he explained some of the method to his madness the photographs came to life.

Assignment 9

After looking at Jason Hackett's artwork honestly I was a little perplexed by what his messages were supposed to interpret. This being my first art class I'm unfamiliar with looking at art and trying to decipher a message. But I am learning that it is sometimes about your own interpretation of the work. After talking to Jason about his work, it became more clear what he was trying to do and trying to convey. I was really curious to find out how he broke the ceramic plates the way he did and I found out that he used a sandblaster in order to do that. I thought that Jason's work was very abstract. My favorite part of his artwork is when he would cover up the faces of the people in his work. After talking to Jason I found out that the reason he does that is because of anonymity. He wants the people in his work to remain anonymous so that people can interpret their own message to the work. I also enjoyed the fact that he has a sense of consistency to his art work, almost as if it is a sequential process. I really liked looking at Jason Hackett's work.

Assignment 11
Claire Sherwood follow up

After skyping with Claire Sherwood it is a little more clear what she was trying to portray throughout her artwork. I was curious as to why she was using such harsh objects like concrete with softer objects like lace and frosting. I found out that the reason she does that is because she is a petite woman that wanted to uses the frosting and the lace with the concrete to dress up the masculinity of the objects. Claire talked about being domesticated as a mother and incorporating that into her work since it's a huge part of her life. I also found out, which I thought was very interesting, was that she also used the lace because she was raised very heavily in the catholic church and wanted to incorporate it into the artwork. The videos are all very different because she did in them in cooperation with another woman who would create art and then they would have to create a video for it in order to be more creative. I thought that was an interesting take on creating art. I liked Claire, she seemed very sure of herself and the work that she makes.
